From Compassion to Salvation [Part 2]

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” - 1 Corinthians 1:18

As I looked up, I saw that a crowd of Haitians had formed all around us. Full of curiosity, they began asking questions. The questions ranged from the Garden of Eden to the return of Jesus. Then, a young man asked "the" question.

He asked, "What is the meaning of the cross?"

With a smile as big as Charles', I proceeded to answer this most wonderful question.

In dramatic fashion, I began passionately recounting the Gospel story. How God loved us so much that He was willing to nail His is Son to a cross, a humiliating instrument of torture and death. How He did this so that we could have a new life in Him. A life free from the power of sin and death. A life that is available to all who receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

As I concluded the Gospel message, a young man boldly stepped forward and asked the most important question of his life:  “How do I receive Jesus?”

In this moment the atmosphere shifted, as the angels readied for the celebration.

“What is your name?”, I asked.

  “Mario”, he replied.

“Mario, the bible says that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.(Romans 10:9) Do you believe this?”

Meanwhile, the angels selected the song they would sing and got into position.

  “Yes.”, he said.

I placed my hand on Mario's shoulder and we began to pray.

As Mario began his prayer of repentance, the angelic instruments began to play. As he made his confession, the music got louder and louder. And just when the music was at it's peak, silence flooded Heaven as all listened in.

Mario proclaimed his belief that Jesus died for His sins and that He rose again on the third day. He asked Jesus to forgive his sin, to be his Lord, and to fill Him with the Holy Spirit.

Then “BOOM!”, something like a nuclear explosion went off in the Heavens as the angelic choir erupted with singing, dancing, and rejoicing and Mario's name was eternally written in Lamb's Book of Life!

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
— 1 Corinthians 1:18

In Haiti, the power of the message of the cross shines bright. This message is one of love, hope, and redemption. It is the intersection between wrath and grace, judgment and mercy, death and life – the separating power of sin, and the redeeming blood of Jesus Christ. It testifies to the greatest act of love this world has ever seen. A love that has proven victorious throughout the ages and that has made a way for every nation, tribe, and tongue to have a restored relationship with The Creator.

This love compels me to keep going, to bear witness of what Jesus has done for me, to bring his compassion, his hope, and his promises to the beautiful people of Jérémie, Haiti.
